Plain writing, five ways

Say it plainly

I write for people who are busy. These are the rules I use, built into five skills for an AI tool. Below is a private checker that points at the words worth a second look.

These are my preferences, not rules of good writing. Leave this off unless you want them.

Five skills for an AI tool

Each skill can review your writing and leave it alone, or rewrite it without adding a fact you did not give. Each one carries all its own rules, so you can paste a single file into any AI chat.

The twelve rules

  1. Write for one reader.
  2. Put the point first.
  3. One idea to a sentence.
  4. Use the short, everyday word.
  5. Cut what does no work.
  6. Name who did it.
  7. Drop stock phrases and filler.
  8. Be specific enough to be checked.
  9. Keep real uncertainty and cut the rest.
  10. Say how two things relate.
  11. Claim no more than you know.
  12. Break any rule before you write something clumsy.

Each skill spells these out, and adds the few rules that belong to its kind of writing.
